Why we created K1 Visa Kit after filing our own I-129F petition

Patrick and Ann

This page exists because we believe transparency builds trust. If you're considering using K1 Visa Kit, you deserve to know who built it and why.

We're Patrick and Ann. We met in July 2024, got engaged, and began the K-1 visa process. We filed our I-129F petition in May 2025, and it was approved on December 16, 2025. We're currently awaiting the NVC stage.

This page explains how we approached our case, why we chose to file without a lawyer, and what we learned along the way.

Why We Didn't Use a Lawyer

Before filing, we contacted multiple immigration attorneys to understand our options. Full representation for our case ranged from $3,000 to $5,000+.

After several consultations, we realized our case was straightforward: we had no prior immigration violations, no criminal history, clear relationship evidence, and both of us met the basic eligibility requirements. The attorneys we spoke with confirmed this and explained that the primary value they would provide was ensuring the petition was complete and properly organized.

We recognized that for a simple case like ours, the main challenge wasn't legal complexity—it was understanding what USCIS needed and making sure everything was submitted correctly.

When You Should Use a Lawyer

Immigration attorneys are essential for complex cases. You should strongly consider legal representation if you have:

  • Prior visa denials or immigration violations
  • Criminal history or arrests
  • Concerns about eligibility or admissibility
  • Previous marriages with incomplete divorce documentation
  • Any situation where you're uncertain about how to answer questions on the form

Lawyers exist for good reason. If your case has complications, the cost of representation is an investment in your outcome.

What We Learned While Filing

Filing our petition taught us several things:

  • Organization matters more than complexity. The I-129F form itself is long, but most questions are straightforward if you have the right information ready.
  • Evidence requirements are specific. USCIS wants to see clear proof you've met in person and have a genuine relationship. Knowing what counts as strong evidence saves time.
  • Small mistakes cause delays. Missing signatures, inconsistent dates, or unclear photocopies can result in Requests for Evidence (RFEs) that add months to your timeline.
  • There's no single official guide. USCIS provides instructions, but there's no step-by-step assembly guide that walks you through the entire process from start to finish.

We spent hours researching online forums, cross-referencing advice, and making sure we hadn't missed anything. It worked—our petition was approved without an RFE—but the process felt more scattered than it needed to be.

Why We Built K1 Visa Kit

After our petition was approved, we realized that what helped us most wasn't access to legal expertise (which we didn't need for a simple case), but having a clear process to follow.

We built K1 Visa Kit to provide that process to others with straightforward cases. The kit is designed to help you:

  • Understand exactly what USCIS requires at each stage
  • Organize your documents and evidence systematically
  • Avoid common mistakes that trigger RFEs or delays
  • Feel confident that you've prepared a complete, properly assembled petition

This isn't legal advice. It's organizational guidance based on what we learned while preparing our own case.

What This Is / What This Is Not

K1 Visa Kit is:

  • A step-by-step assembly guide for Form I-129F
  • Document organization templates and checklists
  • Guidance on what USCIS looks for in a complete petition
  • Educational material based on our research and experience

K1 Visa Kit is not:

  • Legal advice or representation
  • A guarantee of approval (USCIS makes all decisions)
  • A replacement for an attorney if your case is complex
  • Affiliated with USCIS or any government agency

Who This Is For

K1 Visa Kit is designed for U.S. petitioners with simple, straightforward cases who want to file without an attorney.

This kit is appropriate if:

  • You and your fiancé(e) have no criminal history
  • Neither of you has prior immigration violations or visa denials
  • You have clear evidence of your relationship and in-person meeting
  • You're comfortable reading instructions and following a structured process
  • You want to save money on a simple case that doesn't require legal expertise

This kit is not appropriate if:

  • You have a complex case that requires legal analysis
  • You're unsure whether you meet the eligibility requirements
  • You have any concerns that would benefit from an attorney's advice

If you're uncertain whether your case is simple or complex, we recommend scheduling a consultation with an immigration attorney before purchasing any DIY guide.
